Columbus, Fake Pork and Dave Chappelle

This week I share with you three totally unrelated hot-ish topics that, in my opinion, share a very important common denominator. They are written in a balanced, sensitive and respectful way. Since this past Monday was Columbus Day, my first offering is a (relatively long) piece on the pros and cons of Columbus and what he represented. After that, we focus on the controversy about the OU refusing to grant a hechsher to fake pork. Lastly, we take on Dave Chappelle’s “Space Jews” joke and explain without hysterics why it really isn't funny and how it is actually quite dangerous.

Blog #1: “Columbus sailed the ocean blue,” by Jeff Jacoby, originally published in the Boston Globe

Blog #2: “Judaism often thrives on new technologies. That doesn’t mean impossible pork should be kosher.” by David Zvi Kalman, originally published in the Jewish Telegraphic Agency

Blog #3: “Dave Chapelle’s antisemitism isn’t funny,” by Mark Goldfeder, originally published in Israel Hayom
